Basic Facts & History
- Capital city of Spain
- Romans invade the Iberian peninsula in 218 BC. and give all Iberians Roman citizenship in 74 BC.
- In 1212, the Moorish rule in Spain falters.
- In 1492, King Fernando and Queen Isabel capture Granada, ending the Moorish rule. All Jews are either forced to convert to Christianity or Exiled from Spain. Also, Christopher Columbus sets sail.
- The Bourbon Dynasty assumes the throne in 1714
- Spain defeats the French in the Peninsular War in 1814.
- In 1898, Spain loses Cuba and the Phillipines in the Spanish - American War.
- Spain becomes a republic in 1931.
- Spain is in a bloody Civil War starting in 1936, ended by General Franco's victory, which started Spain's dictatorship.
- In 1936, Madrid is attacked.
- On April 26, 1937, Dictator Franco allows German forces to bomb Guernica, in the Basque Country, killing nearly the entire civilian population and destroying the town. Pablo Picasso later paints "Guernica," his reaction to the incident.
- Civil Wars ends in 1939.
- Franco dies on November 20, 1975. King Juan Carlos ascends to the throne, creating a democracy.
- In 1980, ETA kills 118 people.
- In July 1997, ETA captures and kills Miguel Angel Blanco, Basque councillor, demanding Basque prisoners be transferred closer to home. Causes national outrage and brings millions to the street in protest.
- in 1998, ETA calls a ceasefire, only to recall it in 1999, and to continue violence in 2000 with car bombs in Madrid.
- In March 2004, more than 200 people are killed in the morning rush hour by nearly simultaneous train bombings at Madrid train stations Atocha, El Pozo and Santa Eugenia.
- In May 2004, Spain pulls troops from the war in Iraq.
- Spain is relatively unharmed during the Eve of Twilight war. However, the faltering prompts a massive pilgrimage to southern cities in 2065, for fear of extreme cold. Seville is hit the hardest by the less affluent, with at times people sleeping 6 or 7 to a room in even the nicest hotels. The rich stay in Madrid.
- Madrid is slowly reoccupied in 2097, and with the lack of sunlight, the city becomes known for it's eternal "marcha," or nightlife.
